Grade Separations

Grade separations involve the division of vehicle traffic and railroad traffic by building bridges over or under the railroad tracks, or rerouting the train tracks over or under existing streets. 

In 2001, SANBAG (the predecessor agency to SBCTA) completed a study of the length of time motorists have to wait at railroad crossings and established a list of the longest delay times experienced currently and projected in the year 2020. From that list, the Board of Directors established a priorities list for funding grade separations from this $240 million allocation.
