Arrow’s First DMU Arrives in San Bernardino

Another major milestone was realized on Thursday, December 2nd, as the first Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU), slated for service on the Arrow corridor between San Bernardino and Redlands, was delivered to the Arrow Maintenance Facility in San Bernardino. This new train is the first of three that will serve as the initial fleet for the upcoming service scheduled to begin in the summer of 2022. Over the coming days, the new train will see its final assembly in preparation for an extensive testing period to ensure that Metrolink can continue to offer the public a safe and reliable transit option.

As you know, the DMU is the precursor to the future Zero-Emission Multiple Unit (ZEMU) that is currently in development. We expect to see that addition to the network delivered by the end of 2023 or early 2024. Implementation of this first-of-its-kind technology in North America will truly revolutionize transit throughout the region and beyond.

The future Arrow service represents the foundation to a more comprehensive transit approach in San Bernardino County. The aforementioned vehicles offer our partners at Metrolink new ways to address service frequency and long-term system maintenance. Coupling enhanced public rail transit with projects like the future West Valley Connector BRT Project, a privately-invested rail connection between the High Desert and the Metrolink San Bernardino Line, and a first-mile/last-mile connection to Ontario International Airport, means more transit choices for San Bernardino County residents and our neighbors.
