I-10/Cedar Avenue Interchange Project Groundbreaking on January 13th.

North First Avenue Bridge Project Groundbreaking on January 26th.

We celebrated in January by breaking ground on two projects – the I-10/Cedar Avenue Interchange project in the community of Bloomington and the North First Avenue Bridge project in the high desert.

On a chilly January morning in the community of Bloomington, SBCTA President Art Bishop, San Bernardino County Supervisors Dawn Rowe and Joe Baca, Jr., Mayors Deborah Robertson of Rialto and Acquanetta Warren of Fontana, and Caltrans District 8 Acting Director Rebecca Guirado, we celebrated the start of construction and spoke about the importance of relieving congestion, enhancing safety, and improving traffic operations at the I-10/Cedar Avenue interchange. The two-year project is an excellent example of how Measure I funds, the half-cent sales tax collected through San Bernardino County for transportation improvements, are helping solve mobility challenges in the region. This project was the number one priority project in the Measure I 2010-2040 Freeway Interchange Program and a bulk of the $112-million project is funded in part from the voter-approved Measure I.

Later in the month, hundreds of residents, first responders, supporters, bridge enthusiasts, and media joined SBCTA President Art Bishop, San Bernardino County Supervisor Dawn Rowe, City of Barstow Mayor Paul Courtney, and Caltrans District 8 District Director for Maintenance Jim Rogers at the historic Harvey House in the City of Barstow for the groundbreaking of the North First Avenue Bridge Project. Deemed structurally deficient and functionally obsolete, the project is hailed as a major accomplishment for those who fought hard for the new bridge that will enhance safety and pedestrian walkways and re-establish a safety connection between the two parts of the city – the residential north portion and the downtown business district.
