Achieving a Greener Transportation Future

In a significant step towards achieving a greener transportation future, a recent news article explains how California recently passed groundbreaking train emissions rules, demonstrating the state’s ongoing commitment to combating climate change and improving air quality. The new regulations aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from trains and improve air quality throughout the state.
SBCTA is playing a leading role in this statewide effort and setting an example for the rest of the country by demonstrating the importance of reducing rail emissions and making all transportation and transit modes as efficient, economical, and environmentally responsible as possible.
In 2024, SBCTA will debut North America’s first compliant passenger service featuring a battery and hydrogen-powered passenger train, known as the Zero-Emission Multiple Unit (ZEMU) rail vehicle, that will use a hybrid hydrogen fuel cell and battery technology to propel the vehicle, providing a cleaner transit option for the community.
ZEMU eliminates emissions associated with traditional diesel-powered trains, making it a perfect fit for the state’s new emissions standards. With zero direct emissions, ZEMU will help mitigate air pollution and improve the quality of life for San Bernardino County residents along the Arrow rail corridor.
Diesel Multiple Units are currently in operation on the nine-mile Arrow corridor between Redlands and San Bernardino and over time, SBCTA will work toward converting the DMU fleet to ZEMU.
The introduction of California’s first-in-nation train emissions rules marks a significant milestone in the state’s ongoing commitment to combating climate change and improving air quality. Zero-emission transit options are around the corner and Arrow commuters and travelers will soon have access to a greener and more efficient mode of transportation. SBCTA is committed to continuing to lead the nation toward a more sustainable future, one emission-free train ride at a time.
