On Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the City of Barstow celebrated the completion of the North First Avenue Bridge project, a critical project led by the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA), with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that highlighted its importance to the community and the region’s transportation network.
Hosted by the City of Barstow, the event began with a reception and program at the historic Harvey House, where dignitaries, local officials, and community members gathered. Remarks were delivered by Interim City Manager Andrew Espinoza, Jr., Mayor Paul Anthony Courtney, SBCTA Board President Ray Marquez, and Barstow Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Eugene Butticci. Following the program, attendees walked to the new bridge to officially cut the ribbon, marking the project’s grand opening.
The new bridge replaces a structure built in 1930 that no longer met modern safety and functionality standards. Spanning approximately 1,179 feet, the new concrete bridge features a modern design with enhanced amenities, including a wider pedestrian walkway, eight-foot shoulders for bicyclists, and a lookout point over the railway. The project also involved constructing new access roadways to the bridge, featuring upgraded intersections at Hutchison Street and White Street. These enhancements will support the city’s growth by strengthening connectivity, improving goods movement, and ensuring safe access to schools, hospitals, and essential services for residents.
Funding was made possible through federal, state and local Measure I funds, and contributions from the City of Barstow.
“This new, modern bridge is a testament to Barstow’s bright future,” said Interim City Manager Andrew Espinoza, Jr. “It marks the beginning of a transformative era for our city as we partner with BNSF Railway to position Barstow as a key hub in the national transportation network.”
SBCTA Board President Ray Marquez echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to enhancing mobility and quality of life through projects like the North First Avenue Bridge. The new bridge symbolizes progress and collaboration, laying the foundation for a thriving and connected community.
