SBCTA Coordinating with Neighboring Agencies to Expand Energy Efficiency Opportunities

January 11, 2019

Regional Energy Networks are becoming an option for local governments to continue providing their communities energy efficiency support. The State of California has been a leader in energy efficiency and through the California Public Utilities Commission’s (CPUC) direction; Investor Owned Utilities (IOUs) have been working to meet the State energy goals such as AB 32, AB 802, and SB 350. IOUs have taken a leadership role with energy efficiency programs and technology. To date, there are over 40 Local Government Partnerships, like the San Bernardino Regional Energy Partnership (SBREP) – an effort coordinated among SBCTA, Southern California Edison and So Cal Gas that provide their local jurisdictions with energy efficiency support.
Since 2015, the SBREP has reduced more than 6 million kilowatt hours and received $2.5 million in rebates and incentives. These achievements were possible through coordination and resources that have included free technical assistance to analyze project feasibility, coordination of IOU applications, procurement assistance, and information and education sharing opportunities presented through the partnership.
At the January SBCTA Board of Directors meeting, the Board authorized staff to pursue the development of a Regional Energy Network in coordination with the Coachella Valley Association of Governments and the Western Riverside Council of Governments in an effort to expand these efficiency efforts.  For more information about the Board action, view the agenda item here.
