I-10 Mount Vernon Avenue Improvements

The San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA), California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and the City of Colton have partnered to improve Mt. Vernon Avenue over Interstate 10 (I-10). The project will enhance circulation and mobility along Mount Vernon Avenue between East Valley Boulevard to the north and the I-10 eastbound ramps/Mt. Vernon Avenue intersection to the south.
Improvements include replacing and widening the existing Mt. Vernon Avenue bridge over I-10, upgrading roadway and intersection operations, and enhancing bicycle and pedestrian facilities through the interchange. The project will also provide Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant curb ramps, crossing activators, and tactile warning surfaces at intersections where crosswalks are included.
These upgrades will help reduce local congestion, improve safety for all users, and support future transportation improvements in the corridor, including planned I-10 Express Lanes. Construction began in May 2026.
Over the coming weeks, construction crews will continue roadway excavation activities along the project corridor. Crews will also begin mobilizing large construction equipment within the project area in preparation for upcoming shoring operations. Intermittent lane and ramp closures within the project limits will be needed to facilitate these activities.
Construction work will generally take place Monday through Friday during daytime hours (7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) and nighttime hours (8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.). Motorists are advised to reduce speeds, follow all posted signage, and use caution when traveling through the work zone. Please check the Google Map for the most up-to-date closure information.

Construction crews are scheduled to continue drainage and shoring activities during the week of September 21. Shoring work will take place along eastbound (EB) and westbound (WB) I-10 between 9th Street and Sperry Drive during daytime hours behind K-rail barriers.
Construction is also underway at the northwest corner of the N. Mt. Vernon Avenue and E. Valley Boulevard intersection. Work is expected to continue for approximately two months, and business access will be maintained throughout construction.
The following closures are required daily from 7:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m., Monday, September 21 through Friday, September 25, to safely facilitate this work:
- Intermittent lane closures on N. Mt. Vernon Avenue between E. Valley Boulevard and the EB I-10 off-ramp
- Intermittent lane closures on Valley Boulevard
- Intermittent lane closures on WB I-10 from Sperry Drive for work to repair a broken crash cushion, Monday, September 21, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
The sidewalk on the north side of Valley Blvd between N.Sperry Drive and N. Mt. Vernon Avenue is temporarily closed during construction. A temporary pedestrian walkway is available for use. Please follow the posted detour.
The bus stop located on the southeast corner of Mt. Vernon Avenue and H Street is temporarily closed due to construction activities. During the closure, passengers may use the alternate Omnitrans bus stop located on the northeast corner of Mt. Vernon Avenue and H Street.
