Get ready for a breath of fresh air when San Bernardino County joins the rest of California in celebrating Clean Air Day on Wednesday, October 2.
California’s Clean Air Day is an annual statewide event that takes place on the first Wednesday of October to raise awareness about air quality and inspire action to try carpooling or riding public transit to create new habits and improve the air we breathe.
Here in San Bernardino County, area transit providers are joining in by offering free rides. Here’s a list of participating transit providers:
Our Commuter Services webpage can help you plan your free ride with these providers.
Working toward a cleaner future
Recognizing the need for improved air quality every day, the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority continues to lead efforts toward a greener future with three current projects: ZEMU, a zero-emission hydrogen and battery self-powered train, the West Valley Connector (WVC) zero-emission bus service, and ONT Connector’s underground autonomous electric shuttles between Ontario International Airport (ONT) and Cucamonga Metrolink Station.
West Valley Connector
Currently under construction, WVC will be a 100 percent, zero-emission Bus Rapid Transit system running between the cities of Pomona and Rancho Cucamonga. The 19-mile route will offer 21 stations and include 3.5 miles of center-running, dedicated bus-only lanes. The WVC route will provide a much-improved transit connection between popular area destinations, such as Ontario International Airport, Metrolink lines and major activity centers along the route including Ontario Mills and Victoria Gardens. Construction of WVC is expected to be complete in 2026. Learn more here.
ZEMU, Zero-Emission Multiple Unit
ZEMU, North America’s first federally compliant self-powered, zero-emission passenger train, has quickly become the picture of passenger rail future in California. Praised by the California State Transportation Agency, ZEMU is leading the way for a greener future in our region. The passenger train uses hybrid hydrogen and battery technology to propel the train and power onboard electrical systems. Water vapor is the only emission generated from the propulsion system, making this a clean transit alternative. The train is in the final phase of testing and expected to enter service in early 2025. Learn more here.
ONT Connector
ONT Connector will use the innovative approach of tunneling, to create an underground transit connection between the Cucamonga Metrolink Station and ONT terminals. The tunnel will support a two-way system where passengers traveling to and from ONT will be transported in autonomous, zero-emission shuttles on an “on-demand” basis. ONT Connector will help reduce congestion on local streets and highways and offer a connection to transit options throughout the county. The project is currently in the environmental review process and could be complete in 2031. Learn more here.
We invite you to join us in celebrating California Clean Air Day for the benefits it will bring us today and in the future!
